Chapter 3
Drivers and Discovery

With a Usb2Gun in hand, I started to study it’s layout. Most of the board is well marked with legible silk screening, but there was still a whole slew of connectors that had no identity. There was also driver concerns..... Would this board need special drivers to run under Dos? Under windows? I knew that American Army ran on a Linux-based system, but again would I need special drivers if I chose to build a Linux/Mame set up? With so many unanswered concerns? I thought it would be really best if I could get a hold of some actual hardware, and maybe even the restore CD for this game?

It wasn’t until October 2, 2021 that my need was answered at a Auction Game Sales event, held in Pennsylvania. Located in a small row of less then  pretty machines, sat my future American Army game, in a broken state of affairs.

During the preview of this auction, I took the time to plug it in and the whole thing seemed fairly dead with the faint glow of a blue light from a computer inside the cabinet.

Worst case scenario I thought would be that I would at least have a physical example of how this board was wired… Turns out my deal was better than that
